How to increase PHP limits for uploaded WordPress themes

If you choose to upload and install an advanced WordPress theme, you may find that your server environment needs to be changed in order for the theme to work correctly. Specifically, the theme may require you to increase the default memory and file size limits, which are designed to protect the server from running poorly coded or potentially malicious applications.

There are three PHP directives that may need attention:

  • memory_limit
  • upload_max_filesize
  • post_max_size

PHP directives are typically managed through a PHP.ini configuration file on your server. However, we do not allow direct changes to PHP.ini on HostPapa servers. PHP configuration changes can be made using My cPanel.

Log in to your HostPapa Dashboard and select My cPanel from the top navigation menu. Scroll down to the Software section and click Select PHP Version.

My cPanel

Now click Switch to PHP Options.

PHP selector

Locate the PHP directive you wish to amend and click the value. A dropdown menu or text input box will appear, allowing you to change the value as required. Check your theme’s documentation (or on-screen error message) to find the correct value. Do not exceed this value or your server could become unstable.

PHP directive settings

Click Apply, then the Save button to complete the change. Your WordPress theme should now work correctly.
